Lisa Barry

Lisa Barry undertakes community and educational projects with primary and secondary schools, as well as previous experience working with adult groups.

Lisa was an artist in residence for The Field Fund at De La Salle School in St Helens, funded by Anthony Gormley, during Liverpool Biennial 2006 (see www.fieldproject.co.uk).

Projects might take various forms from visual literacy to developing narratives and film based work. Previous school based projects have included working with other arts practitioners such as poets, actor/directors, choreographers/dancers and live artists. Collaborative work is embraced, as is working alongside teachers to develop mutually as mentors and practising artists. Lisa’s own creative history is a wide range of arts and crafts, literature and media and has had her work published in The British Journal of Photography.

Personal work includes costume, images and narrative forms. The results may be large scale installations involving costume, photography and films, or smaller mixed media pieces. One example is Shoe Chronicles, a book exhibited first in 2005 and then in 2007. The one-off book presented some of the results of photographing a different pair of shoes every day for the whole of 2004. From the shoe project came the tag Lizzyredshoes, which is a continuing project examining aspects of female identity – visual artist, mother, dancer, writer, designer-maker.

Lisa is a member of Pool Arts, a group of artists based in Greater Manchester who work towards developing community links and encouraging the presence of art in non-traditional spaces. One example is the SHED Gallery, which is sited in allotments in Levenshulme, Manchester, and is available for artist submissions for private shows. Recently a photograph taken by Lisa was exhibited at Liverpool Tate Gallery. It received an award from The Cheshire Building Society for ‘Best Depiction of Society of the Future’.

Lisa is currently working with the Right2No Group – a project for high school pupils who have volunteered to participate in workshops, a residency, and make an educational DVD on climate change issues to inform their peers.
